Adams State Theatre offers comedy and romance in one-act plays
COMEDY and romance, the perfect early Valentine’s Day experience. The Adams State University Theatre Department opens “Emergency Prep,” and “We Lovers,” two one-act plays, on Wednesday, Feb. 8, in the Xperimental Theatre.
“Emergency Prep,” by Cherielyn Ferguson, is directed by senior theater major Lisa Mix. After reading through “Emergency Prep,” she knew it was the one for her. “It’s really funny and made me laugh as I read through it.”
The play takes a light-hearted look at four eccentric tenants who gather to create a plan to survive whatever emergency lurks out there for them in these uncertain times. The orderly process of getting contact information and sharing their own oddball person protection strategies devolves into chaos when they decide to stage a response to an imaginary emergency.
“I like the message about friendships and how they survive the rough patches,” said Mix.
“We Lovers,” by Christian St. Croix, is directed by senior theater major Daniel Glover. On a late summer’s evening in a wildly lush clearing in the middle of the woods, four young adults gather to tell their best, most fantastical love stories.
“Theater is storytelling and ‘We Lovers’ is magical with elements of escapism, which drew me to theater in the first place,” said Glover.

The production run time is approximately one hour including a short intermission.
The play is all about love told by poets. “I originally looked for romance and in particular one that showed relationships in a natural form between LGBTQ+ couples.”
Glover cast four actors in his play. “The best moment of directing comes when we all feel like family. We have overcome the awkwardness and it all gels together as we become a close community.”
Mix said she appreciates the connections and friendships she made throughout her college career in the Theatre Department. “I’ve made true friendships that will last forever.”
Both she and Glover have been involved in all aspects of theater, from costuming, acting, set, light, stage design, stage management and directing. “Being able to experience all aspects of theater sets Adams State apart from larger programs where you have to choose your concentration and that is your path,” Glover added.
After graduation this spring, Mix will stay close to home with intentions of helping out the local theater community. Glover plans to move to a metropolitan area and begin his lighting design career.
