ALAMOSA Fire Department Chief Don Chapman will be retiring after just over 17 years on the job. Though he’s announced his retirement, he says there is no set date on when that day will be. He wants to ensure there’s a smooth transition for whoever the city hires.

The city announced the opening for the position on June 22. The application deadline is July 25 by 5 p.m. Chapman will sit on the interview committee for the city and assist in selecting a replacement. You can find the application for the position here.

Chapman started as fire chief in December 2005. “I will be around there until sometime this fall and  longer if need be, I don’t have any set dates. It’s just whenever they get a replacement in place and I want to stay and make sure there’s a smooth transition,” he said.
