Fire in Monte Vista destroys two homes
A fire engulfed two houses in the 700 block of Clay Street in Monte Vista on Wednesday. At approximately 2:45 p.m. on March 8, the Monte Vista Fire Department was dispatched to the area. According to officials, the fire spread quickly, fully engulfing two properties. However, the MVFD was able to quickly contain this fire to the two properties, preventing further damage or destruction.
This fire displaced one family who is currently being assisted by the American Red Cross and victim’s advocates.
Residents in the immediate area were told to evacuate, with assistance from Monte Vista Police officers, Rio Grande County deputies, and state troopers. Officials were able to secure the area, allowing fire personnel to contain the fire. Due to the extent of the fire damage, both properties were deemed a total loss.
The point of origin and cause of fire have not been determined. Monte Vista Fire Chief Pat Sullivan has requested the assistance of Colorado Division of Fire Prevention and Control investigators.
The Monte Vista Police Department is assisting in the investigation along with the 12th Judicial District Attorney’s Office. Cause and origin will be determined with the help of the state fire investigator. This is an ongoing investigation that, once completed, law enforcement and the District Attorney’s Office will review the information to determine whether charges are appropriate.
