YOU can see it on their faces – the joy of the rodeo at the 100th Ski Hi Stampede. Whether it be the bucking broncs, the gals racing around the barrels, the steer wrestlers, and especially the clowns but all the entertainment brought smiles to faces of the rodeo crowds.
It’s the oldest rodeo in Colorado and it delivered in its 100th year with the shine of the shiniest belt buckle. Here’s a photo gallery by C. Claire Lara that captured some of the action and fun.

DWIGHT Yoakam delivered. Monte the Cowboy made his debut at Friday’s parade. The birthday cupcakes were tasty. All in all, the 100th Ski Hi Stampede and its new events center opened to rave reviews and will look to keep the momentum going into the weekend.
In the shadows of all the fun there is a heightened sense of awareness and presence among police and safety teams. The Monte Vista Police Department issued a statement Friday indicating it was aware of “rumors floating around of disruptions to Stampede” and that it has coordinated with the Stampede to “address security concerns and have numerous security measures in place.”
“We remind people: See Something, Say Something.”
The crowds for the Dwight Yoakam and the Josh Abbott Band concert were thick but easily managed in the spacious new events center complex. The after-concert Fireworks Show added to Thursday evening’s opening night.
Among the highlights to come Saturday are the parade at noon and then Day 2 of the PRCA rodeo. You can find a full schedule of events at SkiHiStampede.com.
