Youth-led walking tours set for June
THE Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area is offering three youth-guided walking tours in June. Tours are 2-5 p.m. The dates and locations:
- Friday, June 3: Walk of San Luis Japanese Tour. It begins from the Sangre de Cristo Catholic Church in San Luis.
- Friday, June 10: Antonito/Jack Dempsey Tour. It begins at the Warshauer Mansion in Antonito, 515 River St.
- Friday, June 17: Historic Alamosa Tour. It begins at the Blue Peaks Developmental Service Office, 703 Fourth Street in Alamosa.
The tours are part of the heritage area’s Caminos del Valle project, which recruits and trains youth between the ages of 16-18 and represent the counties of Alamosa, Conejos and Costilla.
The youth are trained in group leadership roles in neighborhoods and public lands, cultural and historical nature of the SdCNHA, land and water conservation, nature-based education, walk facilitation, cultures, landscape, and tradition. Along with learning the local history, the youth are also trained in First-Aid and CPR, public speaking, and self-defense.
This year’s cohort are Hayden, Jamie, Josh and Allison. They will lead and assist their cohorts in the June walking tour events which are free to the public. Participants of the walking tours will explore history, culture, landscapes, and traditions, which youth have learned from local historians.
