This region transforms into one of the most enchanting settings, drawing visitors to its high mountain passes and sprawling national forests. Whether you seek peaceful hikes amidst the colorful foliage or breathtaking scenic drives, Southern Colorado offers an abundance of opportunities to immerse yourself in the beauty of fall. Here are 10 must-visit locations to experience this seasonal spectacle.


1. Cumbres Pass

Cumbres Pass, situated at over 10,000 feet along the Colorado-New Mexico border, is renowned for its breathtaking panoramic vistas, especially during autumn when golden aspen groves adorn the landscape. A remarkable way to experience this seasonal transformation is aboard the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, a historic narrow-gauge railway that winds through the heart of the San Juan Mountains.

2. Cuchara Pass

Cuchara Pass, located along Colorado’s Highway of Legends National Scenic Byway, rises to nearly 10,000 feet in the Sangre de Cristo Mountains. Accessible via State Highway 12, it is located approximately 33 miles southwest of Walsenburg. The best time to visit Bonanza for foliage is mid to late September when the high-elevation slopes reach their peak colors, often lasting into early October. 9. Pagosa Springs

Approximately 27 miles north of Pagosa Springs, Piedra Falls presents a premier location for experiencing fall foliage. This distinct two-tiered waterfall, positioned against a backdrop of volcanic cliffs, provides a dramatic setting for autumn’s colors. The surrounding aspen groves display a brilliant golden hue, with peak foliage typically occurring in late September. The area’s diverse vegetation further enhances the vibrant and layered autumn landscape, establishing it as a highly recommended destination.

The aesthetic appeal of Piedra Falls during the fall season is particularly noteworthy.
