A little park on the south end of Alamosa has been getting a lot of love and attention of late.
The display comes through a collaboration with the Maestas Case Committee, the Sangre de Cristo National Heritage Area and the city of Alamosa. Earlier this year the Alamosa City Council adopted a slight name change to the park to emphasize the “historic” nature of the neighborhood in context to the Maestas Case and school segregation.
The new interpretive signage is part of the ongoing efforts by the Maestas Case Committee to build a lasting legacy to the 1912 case, which ended segregation of children in the local public school system.
Zapata Park off Ross Avenue and between Eight and Ninth streets has gained a new focal point as a neighborhood park. The park also honors the spirit of Alamosa native Reyes Martinez, who was 26 and a CU law school graduate when he died in a car bombing in Boulder in 1974.
The park also sits next to Alamosa School District’s new family center, and the Shooting Stars Cultural and Leadership Center operated by Jamie and Crystal Rae Dominguez.
