Voters rejected an Alamosa school bond proposal for a second time, while school boards in Sanford, Center and Sangre de Cristo got new members following Tuesdayโ€™s municipal and school election.

In the Alamosa City Council races, Jan Vigil won another term as an at-large member, while Mark Martinez won the write-in vote to represent Ward 4. Those were the two contested races. Ty Coleman won another term as mayor and Dawn Krebs won re-election to Ward 2 in unopposed races.

โ€œI want to thank the citizens of Alamosa for entrusting me with another term on the city council,โ€ Vigil said. โ€œI am proud to be a part of a team that tackles tough and gnarly issues. I will continue to listen and work for the people of Alamosa and keep getting things done, a motto I have run with since I was first elected in 2013.โ€

The Alamosa school bond was behind by 173 votes out of 3,547 votes cast, according to unofficial results, or 52.4 percent against and 47.5 percent for the bond proposal.

The school district asked voters to approve a $30 million bond issuance to pay for a variety of school improvement projects at Ortega Middle School, Alamosa High and Alamosa Elementary. It floated a similar measure, but at $28 million, in November 2024.

The school bond defeat is a setback for a school district that has a list of school security and building upgrades for its aging middle school and high school. A new transportation facility was also part of the bond projects.

Voters, in defeating the school bond proposal a second time, continue to question the school districtโ€™s acquisition of downtown Alamosa property to serve as its administration headquarters and its alternative and online schools.

Alamosa Schools paid $2.3 million for the former Friday Health Plans headquarters at Main Street and San Juan to move its administration offices to the downtown property from office space it was renting in East Alamosa. It is currently renovating the downtown office building to accommodate its alternative and online students, who are expected to relocate to the new space in the second half of the 2025-2026 school year.
