Monte Vista Police Chief Tyler Harford, who is on administrative leave in relation to an alleged off-duty assault, was arraigned in Saguache County court on Thursday morning.

Harford was charged with third degree assault and disorderly conduct on Oct. 25 after an incident that occurred at Otto Mears Park along Pitkin Avenue in the town of Saguache.

Monte Vista turned the investigation over to the Salida Police Department which is conducting an independent investigation and review. During the investigation, MVPD Sgt. Robert Pino will serve as acting chief.

Monte Vista said the decision to place Harford on leave was made in accordance with the city’s Code of Conduct policy and to ensure transparency and maintain public confidence. According to the Colorado Attorney General’s Police Officer Standards and Training database, Harford’s record reflects the allegation

The Citizen contacted Monte Vista City Manager Gigi Dennis via email to confirm that the outside investigation was still ongoing and ask if the city had further comment. A response was not received at the time of writing.

Harford’s attorney, Kodie Clinton, was also emailed for comment and a response was not received at the time of writing.

Harford was named interim chief for Monte Vista after former Chief Sean McDonagh resigned. According to Colorado’s POST site, McDonagh is still a certified police officer but is not currently employed. His resignation came after months of closed-door negotiations on his departure after his relationship soured internally with the city administration and police department. McDonagh started the job in July 2024.

Harford was previously employed at the Saguache County Sheriff’s Office. He was sworn in as Monte Vista’s chief in April after a nationwide search.

A status conference is set for Jan. 22 in Saguache County court.
