When you hear the sound of the whistles and see the steam that powers the locomotives fill the air, you know the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is running and summer has arrived.
Upon invitation, photographers Ryan Michelle Scavo and Dennis Schoenfelder rode the train the 64 miles from Antonito to Chama, New Mexico, to capture a first-summerโs look at the crews and locomotives that provide tourists with one of the San Luis Valleyโs most spectacular experiences.
Both photographers are frequent contributors to Alamosa Citizen and joined the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad crew just ahead of opening weekend.
โAbsolutely stunning views,โ said Ryan Michelle Scavo, who goes by โRyOutsideโ on her social media feeds.
Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad operates passenger service six days a week, Tuesday-through-Sunday through the summer to Oct. 19. Its Fourth of July Train is one of the most heavily booked special event trains.
