Understanding Systemic Oppression and Privilege
Saturday Jan. 10, 1:30-3:30 p.m.
Alamosa Public Library
Our society is built upon a set of unwritten rules that govern what is seen as acceptable and who is valued. Those rules are put in place by the people, communities and organizations that hold power. But if the rules are (often) unwritten, how do they wield that power? In this recorded presentation, Tim Wise will walk us through how power operates in society, shapes injustices and creates disparities, and discuss what it means to recognize those systemic power structures and analyze their impact on marginalized communities.
Local Author Visit: Rick Wertz
Saturday Jan. 17, 11 a.m.-1 p.m.
Alamosa Public Library
Rick Wertz, author of “Coyotes, Gods and Other Critters” will visit for a reading and signing. Of the book, Wertz writes: “I am just another critter. I have DNA of both Coyote and God. I have DNA of all the other critters, porcupine, squid, elf, and a myriad of other manifestations of star dust. The lives of Coyotes, Gods, and other critters are interwoven. They are the triad that makes existence entertaining and challenging in a life and death sort of way. Welcome to our world.” Copies of his book will be available for sale.
