Community leaders gathered Wednesday at the Colorado National Guard Readiness Center to help push forward a school improvement bond for the Alamosa School District.
The Yes on 5A Committee members, led by businessman Hoyt Anderson and banker Joe Martinez, joined Alamosa School District Superintendent Diana Jones to encourage passage of the $30 million bond proposal in November.
โWe are on the right track. We are doing phenomenal things in the Alamosa School District, and we are trying to shine the light,โ Jones said. โWe want to make sure that over the next 20 to 30 years that our students can continue to thrive in a safe learning environment.โ
Jones highlighted how declining enrollment has led to less revenue from the state, as deferred maintenance over many years has increased the need for facilities improvements.

As she finished her presentation, she invited Adams State University President David Tandberg to share his thoughts.
โI’m coming to you as a private citizen and as the father of a school district kid,โ he said. โI want our kids, in every Alamosa School District building, to see and know how much we care. So I’m a big yes.โ
This is the second attempt by Alamosa Schools and its supporters to get a bond proposal adopted to pay for a series of safety and maintenance improvements at elementary, middle school and high school campuses and to the school districtโs transportation facility. Alamosaโs aging middle school and high school, in particular, would benefit from the bond, according to the projects tied to the bond proposal.
A similar bond measure failed by a margin of 331 votes in November 2024 when it captured 46.71 percent of the vote. A simple majority is needed to pass the school bond.
A successful bond vote would result in increases to residential and commercial property taxes to pay back the school debt. Annual taxes would increase by around $60 for each $100,000 of property value. A home with a current value of $300,000 for example would see its annual property tax increase by $180.
The Alamosa School District collects property taxes in Alamosa and parts of Conejos County. Voters within the school district boundaries will decide the bond proposal.
