The Adams State University Department of Kinesiology will host “Considerations for the Female Athlete: Interactions Between Performance and Menstrual Cycle Health” by Marissa Baranauskas, Ph.D., at 6 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 6, in Richardson Hall Auditorium.
The event is free and open to the public.
Baranauskas, an assistant professor in the Human Physiology and Nutrition Department at the University of Colorado-Colorado Springs (UCCS), completed her Ph.D. in human performance at Indiana University, studying interventions to improve endurance performance in elite-level runners and cyclists. Her laboratory group at UCCS, six percent performance, focuses on researching the effects of different types of stressors on menstrual cycle health in female athletes and how varying menstrual cycle characteristics affect exercise performance.
This presentation will overview factors related to the menstrual cycle, such as symptoms and ovarian hormone levels, that affect exercise performance in female runners and cyclists. Additionally, the consequences of certain behaviors associated with high-level exercise training, such as altering exercise intensity/volume and managing energy availability, will be covered.
