The Adam Frisch campaign released a statement following the U.S. Supreme Court’s temporary decision Thursday to allow for emergency abortions in the state of Idaho. The case stems from Idaho v. United States :
“Idaho law prohibits abortions unless necessary to prevent a pregnant woman’s death; the law makes no exception for abortions necessary to prevent grave harms to the woman’s health, like the loss of her fertility. Before the law could take effect, the Federal Government sued the State under the Emergency Medical Treatment and Labor Act (EMTALA). That law requires a Medicare-funded hospital to provide essential care to patients experiencing medical emergencies. The Government’s suit contended that EMTALA preempts the Idaho abortion law in a narrow class of cases: when the state law bars a hospital from performing an abortion needed to prevent serious health harms.”
In this case the Supreme Court sided with the federal government. Frisch responded that the high court’s decision “underscores the critical need to protect women’s healthcare rights.”
“I firmly believe the government has no business interfering in our doctor’s offices. Government-mandated pregnancy has no place in our society. Every woman deserves the right to choose what is best for her body, her family, and her future. This personal decision should stay with a woman, not in the hands of politicians or the government.”
He said his position stands in contrast to his opponent, Jeff Hurd. “My opponent has pledged to enable politicians to ban abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape, incest, or the life of the mother. He is backed by anti-abortion extremists who want to make personal healthcare decisions for women,” Frisch said.
We reached out to the Hurd campaign for any comment. In response, spokesman Nick Bayer emailed:
“With the start of the general election we had hoped for a substantive campaign of ideas and truth. Instead Adam and the Democrats open the general election parading lies about Jeff, his team and his policies. Jeff has been on the record as a constitutional conservative, stating publicly he is against a national abortion ban, is Pro-Life with exceptions for rape, incest, and health of the mother. These are all things Adam knows, and the lies are just the start of him showing his true colors. Adam has campaigned on ‘returning our politics to normalcy’ then propped up a dangerous extremist in the Republican primary, and now kicked off the general election flat out lying. What a shame he and the Democrats have decided voters here in western and southern Colorado don’t deserve the truth. What a typical hypocritical politician.”
