Amy Ortega will move over from Ortega Middle School to be the new principal at Alamosa High School following action Thursday by the Alamosa School Board.

Ortega replaces Andy Lavier, who spent the past decade as principal before accepting a position as assistant superintendent for Center Schools.

She’s been principal at Ortega Middle School since the 2017-18 school year and served as assistant principal at Alamosa High from 2010 to 2017.

“After two rounds of interviews, Amy Ortega was selected as our new AHS principal,” said Luis Murillo, Alamosa School District assistant superintendent. “Amy is a seasoned educator with a proven track record of school improvement. We are excited to have Amy at the helm of AHS to continue the tradition of high performance for all students.”

A selection committee is interviewing candidates this week to fill the principal position at Ortega Middle School.

Ortega Middle School showed improvement in its 2023 Colorado Measures of Academic Success (CMAS) test scores, particular in English language arts. Throughout her tenure as principal at Ortega Middle School, Ortega worked to address student behavior and academic performance.

At Alamosa High she will inherit one of Colorado’s top performing public high school campuses based on its state tests scores and improvement shown under Lavier. The most recent graduating class had two Boettcher Scholarship winners and three Boettcher finalists. The 2024 graduating class also had 10 students recognized who completed their high school career with a 4.0 or above GPA.
