As a reminder in case you see smoke in the distance: Prescribed burns are planned during winter and early spring at Alamosa, Baca and Monte Vista National Wildlife Refuges.
The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service plans to conduct prescribed burn operations on the Monte Vista, Baca and Alamosa National Wildlife Refuges to improve wildlife habitat. Professional fire personnel from the forest service and state and federal agencies will conduct the fire operations and safety monitoring. Weather and circumstances permitting, prescribed burns may take place through April.
“Our number-one priority is safety. Every prescribed burn is carefully planned to ensure the safety of the surrounding community, refuge visitors and firefighters,” said Alamosa and Monte Vista Assistant Refuge Manager Dean Lee.
Signs will be posted along the nearest major roads, and all burns will be monitored until they are declared completely out by fire professionals. The refuges’ auto-tour routes and walking trails may be temporarily closed to the public during fire operations. Areas will re-open as soon as possible based on fire activity and safety needs. Smoke may be visible for several miles from the perimeter of the refuge and people in the area may smell smoke.
