Antonito, you’re next. The Colorado Department of Transportation is planning a major resurfacing project along the stretch of Highway 285 through Conejos County that includes bridge work where the Rio Grande intersects with the highway.
CDOT is seeing it as one of its winter projects that could begin as early as November, according to CDOT regional communications manager Adair Christensen. She said motorists could see delays of up to 15 minutes.
Christensen and fellow regional communications manager Lisa Schwantes were guests on The Valley Pod this week to discuss all of CDOT’s upcoming projects around the Valley. The full episode streams Monday, Oct. 13.
Construction on a series of big-game underpasses through a seven-mile stretch just east of Fort Garland and onto La Veta Pass is nearing completion, Christensen said. CDOT also completed this summer a paving project along the Highway 285 “Gun Barrel” from Monte Vista to Center.
CDOT’s longer term projects in the Valley looking out into 2030 include an estimated $12 million repave of state Highway 370 to Highway 285 in Alamosa County; curb, gutter and sidewalk installations from the East Side bridge in Alamosa to state Highway 17; and improvements on Highway 160 at Pike Avenue in Alamosa at an estimated cost of $15 million.
