The building at 513 State Avenue had been home to a series of taverns for a long time, but after State St. Treasures closed, the building sat empty and vacant for too long. With a revitalization of State Avenue occurring, Joseph Serrano has a new vision for the building and will be bringing it back to life with what he’s calling The 719.
Originally from Nevada, Serrano gained experience working in the bar industry in Las Vegas. He has family in the San Luis Valley, and after moving here in June to be closer to that family, purchased the building which was home to Greco’s Lounge for the better part of 30 years.
Before that it was also a tavern for about 30 years.
Serrano wants to “continue the legacy” of the building. He presented his plans for the building to the Alamosa City Council during Wednesday’s meeting. In a 6-1 vote, his license was approved and now the work can begin. Councilor Michael Carson voted no, but told Serrano he had a great plan and vision.
Councilor Charlie Griego along with his brother Valentino once owned Greco’s Lounge. By voting in favor, Griego symbolically gave Serrano his blessing to continue that legacy. “It’s always been a tavern,” Griego said.
The 719 won’t be just another bar to add to Alamosa’s other watering holes. It will be a community place, Serrano says. The floor plan is set up to have a stage section, with plenty of space to dance, booths and tables, and accommodate even the biggest sport events. He hopes to host community events, live music, open nights, dances, and cater to a more community-centered clientele, too.
He is also trained and certified in the TIPS Program, an alcohol safety course, and will make sure his entire staff is trained and certified.
There’s some work to be done on the building. Serrano said his dad will be helping him with restoration and most of all, making the facade of the building new and inviting.
After the presentation, Mayor Ty Coleman, and most of the City Council, told him it was “one of the best” liquor license presentations they’ve ever seen.
Eddie Valdez, co-owner of Knee Knockers Bar and Grill, spoke in favor of The 719. Serrano has worked as a bartender at Knee Knockers for the past few months, Valdez is sad to see him go but happy to see Serrano’s vision in action. After reminiscing, Valdez told the city council, “I would love to see that [building] become a vibrant asset to the community again.”
