On Wednesday, June 11, at 5 p.m., traffic will be shifted onto a temporary bypass US 160 east of Fort Garland. Flagging operations will occur while crews install temporary striping and prepare for the traffic shift on Monday, June 9. Width restrictions of 11 feet will remain in place, and speed will be reduced to 40 mph. 

This traffic shift will allow crews to remove the old structure and build the new wildlife underpass. This traffic shift and temporary bypass will be in place through the summer. 

This project is located east of Fort Garland in Costilla County on US 160 from MP 258-265. Project work consists of acceleration and deceleration lanes, wildlife safety improvements, and intersection improvements at US 160 and Trinchera Ranch Road. Travelers are urged to plan ahead and expect short delays. The project is scheduled for completion in 2026.

Traffic Impacts

Motorists and area residents can expect the following impacts Monday through Friday during daytime work hours, generally 7 a.m.-7 p.m.

  • Single lane closures and shoulder closures will take place within the work zone.
  • Periodic flagging operations for alternating one-way traffic
  • 11-feet width restrictions.
  • Speed reduced to 40 mph in project limits.
  • Plan ahead and expect delays.
