Former Colorado House District 62 State Rep. Donald Valdez is running for Conejos County treasurer. Valdez will be running against Cathy Flores in the June 30 Democratic primary.

“The treasurer’s office is one of the heartbeats of our county’s infrastructure. My experience at both the state capitol and right here in Conejos County has given me a deep understanding of how to protect and administer taxpayer dollars while ensuring our financial systems are efficient, transparent and modern,” Valdez said in his announcement.

Valdez previously served as the deputy public trustee in Conejos County. He said his legislative oversight and experience demonstrate “a mastery of government compliance and staff management.”

In his announcement, Valdez said his campaign platform focuses on three key pillars: Fiscal Integrity, ensuring rigorous auditing and responsible investment of county funds; Modernization, implementing innovative technologies to streamline services for residents; and Local Advocacy, using his deep ties to the agricultural community to ensure the treasurer’s office supports the unique needs of the local communities of Conejos County.

A graduate of Adams State University, Valdez holds a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in public administration. He is an active member of Rotary International, a board member for the Colorado Alzheimer’s Association and “a recognized leader in Southern Colorado.”

“I am running for treasurer to bring a high standard of professional excellence to our County. I have spent my career navigating complex budgets and advocating for the San Luis Valley. I am ready to put that experience to work for every resident of Conejos County,” he said.
