Alamosa County Coroner Joe Dzuris confirmed Monday that Enrique Parra Jr., 44, was the victim in a shooting on Aug. 1, and the cause of death was homicide. Larry Chavez is the named suspect in the shooting. Chavez fled the scene in a stolen vehicle and was captured Aug. 2 in Santa Fe, NM, by the U.S. Marshals Service and the Santa Fe County Sheriff’s office.

Chavez is being charged with second-degree murder, robbery, and auto theft in relation to the shooting, which took place on the 1700 block of State Avenue. The Alamosa Police Department said that Parra and Chavez were acquaintances. The motive for the shooting is still unclear and under investigation.  The call about a shooting at Century Mobile Home Park came in just after 6:11 p.m. When officers arrived they found Parra with gunshot wounds. After life-saving measures were attempted he was transported to San Luis Valley Medical Center where he was pronounced dead.

Dzuris said the autopsy took place Monday morning and the confirmation was released shortly after.

Chavez fled Century Mobile Home Park in Parra’s 2012 Lincoln MKZ. A large law enforcement response was conducted south of town at a place of interest near County Road 105 South. Chavez was not found there and the investigation continued until the following day when he was captured and arrested in Sante Fe.

Alamosa Police Department detectives were able to retrieve the stolen vehicle and are working with New Mexico law enforcement to extradite Chavez back to Alamosa. The 12th Judicial District and DA Anne Kelly will oversee the case after he is brought back to Colorado.

This case is still under active investigation and more information will become available as it is released by the district attorney’s office.
