YOUNG Greyson Romero is a USA Track & Field Junior All-American and Colorado Athlete of 2022 for ages 8 and under.
On Saturday, Romero and his family will head to Denver, where he will be recognized by USATF during an awards banquet at Regis Jesuit High School. The award follows the young runner’s impressive performance at the USATF National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships in College Station, TX, in December, where he earned All-American status with a third-place finish.
Romero runs for the Penguin Cross Country team, a youth developmental running program headed by Peter De La Cerda. He competed in the 8-under division at the USATF Junior Nationals.
The Penguins qualified 13 runners in various age groups to compete at the junior nationals. Other Penguin runners who competed by division were:
8-under division
Girls: Kinley Wubben, Avarie Lester.
Boys: Greyson Romero, Julius Martinez, Victor Santiago Aldape, Nicholas Monaco and Brandon Medina.
9-10 division
Girls: Sheila Dominga Andres Tomas.
Boys: Cole Edelen.
11-12 division
Girls: Shae Romero, Rose Edelen.

A runner had to finish in the top 25 in their age division to earn all-american status. The Penguins’ Greyson Romero finished third in a field of 219 runners in the 8-under division, and the Penguins 8-under team finished 12th.

ROMERO led for most of the way in the 2000 meter race, De La Cerda said. “He was going for the win and the national championship. He made a strong bid for the title but he came up a little short,” the coach said.
Overall there were 2,000 runners at the USATF National Junior Olympics Cross Country Championships.
“All the parents and coaches want to congratulate the Penguin runners on an excellent season,” De La Cerda said. He added that he “would like to thank the parents and assistant coaches for all their dedication and hard work getting these future runners to all the practices and cross country meets. See you next fall for another season of cross country.”
