THE second annual True Penitence Climbing Festival held court for some fierce competition. A total of 80 climbers from the Valley and beyond turned out for the events. Penitente Canyon is home to just over 300 established, named routes. Challengers had a list of routes they could climb throughout the day to rack up points. Harder climbs were worth more points. The mid-afternoon proved to be the most challenging part of the day as most of the routes were baked in the sun. Hard-fought victories were had and yells of joy and screams of pain echoed along the volcanic tuff walls all day.
